This week we headed to Smoke Hole Outfitters in northeastern West Virginia to see our friend and guide Josh Hedrick. In tow we had Kenny and his son Braxton along with Eric and his son Clay. Saturday marked the turkey season opener only for kids 18 and under. We arrived on Friday and had a hearty dinner cooked by the Hedrick family and it was delicious. The rain moved in on Friday and stopped Saturday morning, just in time to head to breakfast. A 40 minute ride later we arrived at the property we were hunting. Ridge top hunting on 4000+ FT tall mountains was not so successful at daybreak. We finally had a gobbler answer us at 8:30am and he soon peaked his head over the ridge. We were lucky to get him within 35 yards but, Braxton did not have a chance to reposition before he headed back down the mountain. Patrick’s group had a gobbler come in late morning but, Clay could not get a shot before the bird spooked and retreated. After time was up we all headed back to the lodge to do some trout fishing in the pond. Both Braxton and Clay were more than successful fishing. We all had a great time and look forward to coming back next year.
